Are you often finding yourself spending way too much at the grocery store? You tell yourself that you only need milk but come out with a cart full of other items? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. This has likely happened to everyone at least once. It happens to me probably once a month, at least. As a bankruptcy attorney, I see a lot of people have really high grocery bills and they don’t even really realize it. Let’s go over some different strategies you can use to cut back on your grocery bill.
- Make a list before you go into the store. Doing this will help you stay on track of what you really need instead of going down every isle and picking up everything that looks good.
- Don’t go to the grocery store hungry. I know this sounds silly, but seriously, if you go to the grocery store while hungry, you are likely to pick up more items because you want it all right then. Just like if you go to a restaurant and order 2 appetizers before your meal because you are SO hungry, what happens when your entre comes out? You are likely to look at it and say something like “whew, my eyes were bigger than my stomach”.
- Try to keep a rough estimate in your head of the total amount of money you are putting into your cart. Each time you add an item, add it to the total that you have in your head. That way you can budget while you shop.
- Try to make meals out of things you already have at home. Go through your fridge and your pantry and see what meals you can make from what you already have.
- Sometimes buying in bulk isn’t always the best option. It may be cheaper in the long run… but only if you are actually going to use it. Don’t buy that two-pack loaf of bread if you know you will only use one before it expires. Otherwise, you’re just throwing money in the trashcan.
- COUPONS! Many people are embarrassed or think it’s a waste of time to use coupons. However, it’s actually really smart. That little bit here and there really adds up!
- Instead of throwing out what’s left over after dinner, put it in a container and eat it the next day for lunch or dinner. No need for it to go to waste. Plus, you won’t have to buy lunch the next day!
- Shop generic! There are many generic items that taste and/or work just as good as the expensive name-brand items. You might find some generic items that you think aren’t as good, and that’s fine, but some generic items might actually surprise you.
- Eye level items! Marketers strategically plan where to place items on the shelves. Often times, they will place items at eye level so it catches your eye first and you buy their product. They tend to put items that kids will want closer to the bottom (at the child’s eye level) hoping that the child will ask the parent/guardian to get it.
- Freeze meals for later. If you end up making a bunch of food that you know you will not eat over the next day or two, pack it up and freeze it for later. That way it doesn’t go to waste and all you have to do when you want to serve it again is unthaw and reheat it.
