There are many times when you may need a copy of your North Carolina state income tax returns. If you are in legal proceedings such as a divorce or bankruptcy, the court may require a copy or copies of your tax returns. If you are applying for a mortgage loan, the underwriter will require copies of your taxes for verification of income. If you are applying for a job, especially a sensitive government job, the employer may require copies of your taxes as part of a background check.
Obtaining a copy of your North Carolina tax returns is relatively simple. However, be aware it may take several weeks for the North Carolina Department of Revenue to send you the copy. Do not wait until the last minute to order a copy of your tax return.
To order a copy of your North Carolina income tax return, mail a written request to:
NC Department of Revenue
Customer Service
P.O. Box 1168
Raleigh, N.C. 27602
When sending in the written request there are a few things you need to be sure to include.
Your name as it appeared on the return,
Your current mailing address,
Social security number and the tax year of the return that you need.
Unfortunately, there is a fairly lengthy turnaround time for getting a copy of your North Carolina taxes. According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue’s website, “it may take up to 20 days for you to receive your tax return.” For security reasons, you cannot request a copy by telephone. Also, if you are a female and have had a name change due to a marriage, be sure to list your former name as well. The Revenue Department must have a written request signed by you. There is no charge for copies of your return.
Remember, allow your self ample time to receive these tax returns. If you need them quicker then you should contact your attorney or the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
